Ex-boyfriends become the names that cannot be named.
If you want to tell an anecdote that involves them, you have to say a “friend of mine.”
Because if you use their name, the person you are talking to, like your parents, for instance, will say “whatever happened to him. I liked that guy.”
And then you have to explain a whole bunch of stuff you don’t want to explain.

Do you have many anecdotes about exes?
Well let's say you want to say "Bob went to South America and got a weird stomach virus by..."
Your friend knows who Bob is, so you could use his name... but if you do it will lead to unnecessary questioning about him...
That way if you want to tell Bob's story you have to say... A friend of mine went to...
If you're still talking about them does that mean you still love them?
Pgh, a person can't win when it comes to their ex.
If you loved the ex, your friends hate them. If you hated the ex, your friends love your ex.
Anon, not necessarily. You just might have a story to tell about them that relates to the topic at hand. Like, you're talking about scuba diving and you say "oh my ex used to do that."
But if you are talking about your ex all the time, then you might still love them.
